Nethermoor Park            Skrill North          Saturday 7th December 2013

As the rain poured down in West Yorkshire, Boston’s hopes of a rise to the summit of the Skrill North were halted by a resolute Guiseley team, in the middle of their own fine run of form.

Games between the two sides have often been very tight – my previous two visits to Nethermoor Park had seen the Pilgrims lose 1-0 and 2-1 and the first half suggested this would be more of the same. Clear-cut chances were few and far between, with Guiseley failing to hit the target with a couple of early attempts and then Lewis King doing well to deny Alex Johnson, whilst Boston were almost in business when Conor Marshall’s ball across the face of goal was just too far in front of the onrushing strikers, with Carl Piergianni also forcing a save from Steve Drench from a set piece.

However, the game burst into life in the 43rd minute, when, after a spell of good Boston possession, Guiseley won a penalty, as Ian Ross was adjudged to have felled Andy Holdsworth, but King produced an exceptional save to deny Gavin Rothery’s well struck and well placed penalty.

The joy for Boston was only short-lived though, as moments later as Danny Forrest rifled in from 20 yards with a shot which went in off a post.

As the rain lashed down, Boston upped the ante in the 2nd period and created a number of opening, but Spencer Weir-Daley lacked composure from 15 yards, Ricky Miller went with his head for one he could have stuck a leg at and then Marc Newsham rose highest from an Ian Ross cross but failed to hit the target.

Then, after Scott Garner was booked for a wild tackle on Craig Hobson, the Boston number 5 had a deflected shot fly just wide and a Stefan Galinski drive was well held by Drench. Guiseley could have gone 2 up but for a smart piece of goalkeeping by King to deny Hobson on the break, but for all Boston’s pressure, it was to no avail as the Lions held out for 3 points which puts them within 7 points off the playoff teams.
