Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Notts County (SkyBet League One 15/02/2014)

A goal in each half from Michael Jacobs gave Wolves a comfortable 2-0 win over Notts County to tighten their grip on second spot in League One as Leyton Orient faltered away at Preston.

The former Derby man headed in after 17 minutes from a Scott Golbourne cross before driving home from 25 yards nine minutes into the second half.

Wolves started off on the front foot and rarely let off the gas, causing all sorts of problems as the front four of James Henry, Bakary Sako, Jacobs and Nouha Dicko proved too strong for the relegation-threatened Magpies.

They had a number of early chances before taking the lead before Scott Golbourne provided the perfect delivery for Jacobs’ head to give the hosts the lead after 17 minutes.

Notts County barely threatened and their best chance fell to Callum McGregor, who sent his shot from ten yards wide of the far post midway through the first half as they failed to breach the strongest defence in the division.

Wolves, on the other hand, were dominant and could have had more as Nouha Dicko squandered several chances while Bakary Sako was twice denied by Bartosz Bialkowski in the Magpies’ goal.

Dicko had the best chance to make it an even more comfortable win when he was set up by Bakary but he sent his finish wide of the post when it looked easier to put it on target.

On his 150th appearance for Wolves, Richard Stearman got a clean sheet and an assist, surging forward from defence before teeing up Jacobs 25 yards from goal nine minutes into the second half to kill off any chance of a fightback from the visitors.

By contrast, Notts were unable to make any sort of impact on the game, and even as Wolves’ threat died out in the latter stages, County were unable to generate any sort of attacking impetus.

The win means that Wolves are four points clear of third placed Leyton Orient, whilst Notts County are still one point off of safety. The big challenge comes next week for Wolves, though, as they travel to leaders Brentford.
